MGEC Golf Tournament September 14, 2009 at the very nice StoneRidge Golf Club with starting tee time at 12:30 p.m. Teams of 5 members playing using a best ball format will compete for prizes, honor, glory, fun and a few laughs. The fee is $60 per person including first class curb side service, greens fees, driving range, putting green and cart. This is a great deal! Registration form
MGEC Scholarships Three scholarships are available: Two $500 awards for family members of MGEC members and one $1,000 award for an MGEC member.
Connie Minetor Memorial Scholarship In 2002, MGECs board announced the initiation of the member-only scholarship program. The Connie Minetor Memorial Scholarship for MGEC Members is named for the late Connie Minetor, MGEC's first female President (1997/98) and first President from MPCA. It was established to provide help to members seeking to attain a degree or advanced degree in engineering or land surveying, or seeking additional work-related training. Up to $1,000 may be awarded to one MGEC Member (not Fair Share or Associate). Current Board Members are not eligible to apply. Eligible members may apply for the scholarship more than once. If awarded, you would receive the scholarship as a reimbursement after providing proof of payment for the training or course(s).
HOW To apply for the Connie Minetor Memorial Scholarship: Submit a letter of no more than 200 words stating your goals and describing the educational purpose for the scholarship, along with some information on the education or training itself. Applications should be sent to MGEC no later than August 21, 2009 and can be faxed to 651-774-9576, mailed to 475 Etna St., Suite 11, St. Paul, MN 55106 or e-mailed to mgec@mgec.org.
Scholarship for a Family Member of MGEC Two $500 scholarships are available to family members (children, step-children, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, siblings, and legal wards) of MGEC members (Regular, Associate, and Life Members; not Fair Share). Students who are entering their junior or senior year in college and are pursuing a degree in an engineering or land surveying field may apply. If awarded, the student would receive the scholarship money as a reimbursement after providing MGEC with proof of tuition payment.
HOW To apply for the Family Member Scholarship: The student should submit a brief letter which describes their goals and field of study. The letter should also include 1) whether they are entering their junior or senior year, 2) name and relationship to the MGEC member (i.e., child, grandchild, etc.), 3) student's contact information, and 4) a copy of the most recent transcript. Applications should be sent to MGEC no later than August 21, 2009 and can be faxed to 651-774-9576, mailed to 475 Etna St., Suite 11, St. Paul, MN 55106 or e-mailed to mgec@mgec.org.
MGEC Awards - Each year the MGEC Awards Committee seeks nominations for MGEC members to be recipients of the annual Golden Slide Rule Award recognizing outstanding technical skills, superb writing and publication efforts, and for sharing expertise with their peers, and the Distinguished Citizenship Award, recognizing outstanding effort in civic or other community service, which has included both international and local service to a community, and/or for service to the MGEC community. The MGEC Board believes that this program provides a unique opportunity to recognize some of the very special members of our organization. Co-workers, supervisors, or individuals who wish to self-nominate, are encouraged to read the following carefully and consider submitting the application materials. All nominees must be Regular (full dues-paying) Members of MGEC. Nominations will be judged by the Awards Committee on the basis of content, thoroughness, and completeness.

Golden Slide Rule Award
This award recognizes significant and substantial achievements
in the fields of engineering or land surveying based on any or
all of the following categories:
A. Technical Achievement - achievements/ impacts in work unit, division, region, agency or profession; i.e. program/process development, process improvement, technical advance, cost savings, etc.
B. Societal Involvement - professional society leadership roles, committee activities, concept development or organizational contributions such as seminars, etc.
C. Partnerships - initiating/facilitating joint effort with other internal/external organizations.
D. Papers Submitted - published material resulting in significant contribution in organizational structure, method of operation/evaluation, new design; manuals, complicated reports, technical presentations, etc.
E. Scholastic Achievement - Masters or Ph.D., other honors.
Distinguished Citizenship Award This award recognizes significant and substantial contributions to community, based on any or all of the following categories:
A. Service in local, state or national politics - elected, appointed or volunteer activities.
B. Service in community, charitable or civic activities - duration of involvement, level of commitment to activity, impact on involvement on community, creation of program, etc.
C. Volunteer Work - type of work, length of involvement, time commitment, impact within organization or its customers/community, etc.
D. Military Service - combination of National Guard or Reserve service to state and country, community involvement with JROTC and ROTC through high schools and post secondary institutions.
Executive Board Elections Nominations are being accepted for the following positions on the MGEC Executive Board. Terms are two years with meeting occurring on the 2nd Monday of each month from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. at the MGEC office in St. Paul. Negotiations Update MGEC is waiting for the final written summary of contract changes from the State and expects to have the information available next week for a vote of the membership. If approved, progression steps would stop as of Sept. 2, 2009 (this is a change from the prior iteration of the agreement). Steps would resume July 1, 2010. See terms discussed in prior MGEC web newsletter updates.
