Work for the 2019-2021 contract has begun. The MGEC Board has compiled input from members over the past couple years and outlined areas for improvements in the contracts. Once the website update is complete (mid to late May), that input will be added to the web so all MGEC members will be informed and asked for additional input before the actual bargaining takes place in September and October Member input is always welcome (email@example.com or 651-774-0996).
A frequently asked question is why the successor agreement isn’t bargained now, before the end date of the current contract. The answer is that MGEC believes bargaining can only take place when all aspects of the contract can be discussed. Language issues and economic issues are often intertwined. The State is not prepared to begin economic discussion with MGEC until they have reached tentative agreements with AFSCME. Given that, MGEC prefers a condensed period of time for bargaining as a matter of efficiency. By then we know the state’s position on many issues. We prefer to reach a voluntary settlement. But, the timing of this process helps us to prioritize our efforts and provides insight into important issues that, if not resolved in bargaining, may go to interest arbitration.
