President’s Message

15 December 2025

Greetings MGEC members,

I want to start off by saying THANK YOU to our current Board and staff.  I’ve had the pleasure of serving with so many fantastic people this year. Our Board has a wide range of experiences and each person brings significant value to our organization. Our staff (Tony and Donna) truly care about MGEC and our members. Having a staff of only
2 people poses its challenges, but Tony and Donna go above and beyond on a daily basis to continue to improve MGEC.  I’m proud to be a member of MGEC because of you all!

2025 was definitely a busy year of transition for MGEC.  Earlier this year, MGEC and our long-time Executive Director parted ways.  Over the past several months, we successfully negotiated a new contract with the State for the next two years.  Negotiating a new contract is always a significant undertaking for MGEC.  Doing it in a year with as many changes as MGEC has experienced recently is unprecedented. The energy of our Board and staff made it all possible.

I’d like to take this opportunity to encourage all members to get involved in MGEC activities.  MGEC is truly a member run organization and you can make a difference in the direction of MGEC.  Just a few years ago I was an instructor for the MGEC PE review course and it was suggested that I should consider running for the MGEC Board.  I never thought that a handful of years later, I’d be wrapping up my 2nd
President term and feel that I’ve really made a difference to set MGEC up for future success.  You can get involved and make a major difference for MGEC too.  Attend a Board meeting.  Join a committee. Non-board members can serve on committees! Consider running for the Board.  Reach out to us at mgec@mgec.org to let us know that you’re interested in participating more. All members are important and we value everyone’s opinions.  Getting involved in some kind of leadership role (no matter how small it may seem to you) is a great experience.  I know that I’ve learned a lot about how to be a leader over the past few years and I’ve learned lessons that I will value forever both personally and professionally.

We are closing out 2025 with a couple of Board members transitioning off our Board. Thank you to Past President Fernando Nacionales for his service to MGEC. There are very few people who’ve served multiple Presidential terms and Fernando is one of them. Thanks also to Bruce Henningsgaard for his service on the Board as a Director. I’m excited to meet and work with our new Board Directors who will be joining us in January. I’ll be transitioning to the Vice President role to offer
support under the leadership of President Benton Campbell for the next year. I am honored to be handing off the Presidential gavel to Benton as he will be a great leader for MGEC in 2026.

As I said, 2025 was a year of significant transition for MGEC.  MGEC is closing out 2025 in a much better place than we started the year. I’m really proud of the work we’ve done together even amidst many challenges. Thank you all again and I can’t wait to see where MGEC goes in 2026 and beyond!

Sincerely,
Corey Mathisen
