Scholarship & Awards Applications Are Open
MGEC has opened the opportunity to apply for one of three scholarships (2 Family Member Scholarships and 1 Connie Minetor Memorial Scholarship). Applications are currently being accepted and must be received by MGEC no later than by 5:00pm on June 30, 2023. For the MGEC family member scholarship, MGEC will now accept applications from students pursuing post undergraduate degrees and students in their junior or senior year of an undergraduate degree in engineering or land surveying. Congratulations to Laura Lyons on her new position with the State of Minnesota in the Department of Commerce. Because that is not a position represented by MGEC, Laura has resigned as MGEC Treasurer. End of Fiscal Year Reminders
Remember to use your floating holiday and meet the required fiscal year balances for vacation, etc. before the end of the fiscal year (June 30). All employees who were in employment on June 20, 2022, received an additional floating holiday for Juneteenth Day. The additional floating holiday must be used on or before June 30, 2023. Insurance Bargaining
We are currently within the cycle of bargaining the health insurance plan for all state employees. Because everyone participates in the same plan, bargaining is done as a coalition with all of the other state unions. We are pushing a package that makes the insurance more valuable to our members and their families. While it’s too soon to know exactly where we will land (your humble author is writing this in a break at the bargaining session), Union proposals are moving forward to enhance benefits and solve challenges to gaps and barriers to proper coverage. Bargaining Update
MGEC has started the process to bargain the 2023-2025 labor agreement. We are always interested in the bargaining process for the other unions like MAPE and AFSCME. They recently started bargaining with MMB. Those unions are seeking ATB increases around 10% per year. There is no way of knowing what they will eventually settle on, but it’s very relevant for MGEC members because they will set “the pattern” that we will have to contend with. ... Read More >>
