Minnesota Paid Leave (MPL) now joins the list of other leaves available for new parents, those with health conditions, as well as others who qualify for other uses, such as to take care of other members of the family. While each state agency is responsible for implementing their own policies, this is a significant enhancement of benefits for employees who need additional paid time to take care their families and themselves. It’s important to note that MPL runs concurrently with other leaves; it is not the case that when one ends another begins, and so on. They all run together on the same clock. Because the MPL does not pay at 100% of the current rate of pay, MMB is allowing employees to “top off” the MPL leave with other forms of paid leave like sick or vacation. This ensures that employees will continue to receive their full pay so long as they have enough of the additional paid time off to cover it.
We encourage MGEC members to reach out their HR contacts for specific guidance for their unique situations. Also, the MN Paid Leave website is useful and has a toolkit with additional information.
