Workplace Ergonomics: Know Your Rights!

28 January 2025

Workplace safety doesn’t encompass only severe or acute hazards such as one might find in an active construction site, for example.  Your employer is required to ensure that your workspace is free from hazards, including hazards arising from ergonomic issues that can lead to long-term issues.  You have rights under the MGEC contract to ensure that ergonomic issues are resolved. From time to time, someone will raise a concern to their immediate supervisor but the concern is not resolved.  This can be extremely frustrating, particularly when it feels like it’s a one-way, dead-end conversation ... Thank you & Best Wishe

17 December 2024

The MGEC Executive Board changes about half its members each year. That allows all members greater opportunity for participation. This year we are saying thanks to the following board members who have provided several years of service. Carroll Aasen (Director 2023-2024), Dan Sullivan (Vice President 2022, President 2023, Past President 2024). Thank you for your years of service, recruitment of others and willingness to always put forward your ideas!   ... Read More >>

Bargaining Preparation

17 December 2024

2025 is almost here!  As we get ready to open a new calendar, we are also preparing to negotiate the next collective bargaining agreement with the State of Minnesota; the current agreement expires June 30, 2025.  You’ll hear more information about the bargaining process and will be invited to participate in a survey in the coming months.  Our power at the bargaining table is directly correlated with your participation in MGEC.  Being a member of MGEC is critical!  If you are already a member, THANK YOU!  If not, it’s never too late to become one.  Don’t let others decide your future – join and ... MN Infrastructure Alliance Strategizes for the 2025 Legislative Session

17 December 2024

The Minnesota Infrastructure Alliance, formerly known as MN 2050, has rebranded and is planning communication and advocacy strategies for the upcoming legislative session.  Composed of a coalition of professional organizations working to support safe and sustainable infrastructure across the state.  You might be familiar with its “Infrastructure Report Card’, released every other year based on a survey of infrastructure professionals from around the state. That report card will come out in 2026, and the group is focused on developing and distributing comprehensive messaging that tells the ... Read More >>

President’s Message

17 December 2024

It's been an honor serving as your president for the 2nd time, with half of it in absentia (3 months in Japan, 2 months in the Philippines and 1 month in Guam).   Many thanks to Dan Sullivan for his leadership as he hangs his Past President hat for the 2nd time.  Looking forward to Corey Mathisen taking back the President mantle in January.  Thanks to these gentlemen, other board members and officers, as well as our dedicated staff, for your hard work while I was gone. It seems not too long ago when we were in the middle of contract negotiations.  Our 2023-2025 agreement saw the largest ... Read More >>

Board Election Winners

12 November 2024

The MGEC Board Election Results are in.  Even though we didn’t have any contested races in this cycle, we wanted to maintain the rhythm of the election cycle for several reasons: we want to make sure people know that they can select MGEC leadership every year; and we want the names and bios of MGEC leadership to be visible via the election process itself. Pursuant to MGEC’s Constitution, nominations for Board seats were open in September.  The ballots were electronically distributed only to full MGEC members in October, and the voting window closed the same day as the Federal and State ...
